According to a new report from In-Stat, over 1 billion tags were producedlast year, and by 2010, that total will rise to 33 billion. Wal-Mart's requiring of their suppliers touse RFID tags are certainly one reason for the projected growth, as well as potential applications in both theindustrial and retail sectors, such as the tracking of inventory.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: RFID systems, automation and barcode equipment, sensors, labels, scanners - everything you need to keep your operation running smoothly. However, there is the thought that some companies are being forced to use RFID, especially somevendors who have been "directed"by Wal-Mart to use tags on all of their shipments.

In addition, some analysts are saying that CIOs, especially those involved in the retail industry, should come upwith a strategy to assure consumers that they are not being tracked with the use of these tags. It is recommended theydo, or else consumers may end up with a slanted awareness of RFID from what they see, hear, and read from privacyadvocates that may or may not be entirely accurate.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: RFID systems, automation and barcode equipment, sensors, labels, scanners - everything you need to keep your operation running smoothly. It seems like the new thing to get planted (or implanted) into your skin are RFID chipsthat can be programmed to allow you to login to your computer with just a wave of your hand in front of an enabledreader. The chips can be implanted by a surgeon or anyone else "qualified" to do it. There seem to be otheruses for them, and if you're so interested, you can check out this website andget more information. The test is being overseen bythe Department of Homeland Security in an attempt to increase security at various border crossings and internationalairports across the nation. This is all part of a directive from the State Department stating that all U.S. passportsissued after October 2006 would feature RFID chips that carry the holder's personal data and digital photo.

Tests like these will occur more frequently over the next several months, and with immigration likely to be a hottopic in the upcoming congressional elections, this is an opportunity for RFID to prove its mettle as a usefultechnology in security-type applications.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: RFID systems, automation and barcode equipment, sensors, labels, scanners - everything you need to keep your operation running smoothly. The test involves Buscom employees using RFID-enabled Nokia 3220 phones that feature tags embbed in theshell that connect to an application located in the handset. Users then hold up their phones to a reader thatrecognizes the data stored in the phone. Beginning in January, the company is "stressing" to their suppliers that they must adhereto their approach of using RFID tags on shipments. According to Wal-Mart, 200 suppliers are due to begin taggingshipments in addition to their 100 top suppliers, who began tagging earlier this year along with a number of othersmaller suppliers who have voluntarily launched RFID initiatives.

Wal-Mart has been one of the biggest proponents of RFID technology and, let's face it, they are one of thedominant retailers in this country, so if you want to do business with them, you pretty much have to fall in line withtheir directives.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: RFID systems, automation and barcode equipment, sensors, labels, scanners - everything you need to keep your operation running smoothly. school district. AeroScout, along with a group of Japanese companies, including
Nissan Motor Company, has developed a system that uses standard Cisco WiFi access points to locate children wearing
tags as they walk to and from school. In addition, automobile drivers are alerted to the presence of nearby children
through a voice service, to reduce accidents in residential city areas. When a child reaches pre-set points along their
route, the system will notify their guardian. In addition, a kid can call for help by if a need arises by pressing the
Call Button on the tag, which will immediately alert a designated recipient.

This is a really good idea and hopefully this will migrate our way in the near future.

RFID hardware and software will continue to grow for at least the next two years and should total over $3 billion by
2010. According to their research, Gartner believes that businesses are looking to use RFID tags in a number of data
collection applications specific to their own industry, ranging from retail environments to hospitals, as well as what
is currently being leveraged in warehouses to keep track of inventory and shipping. In addition, Garnter says there
will be a greater use of RFID in pharmaceutical manufacturing in order to combat diverting and counterfeiting.

believe that companies, retail outlets, and even government agencies will use data from these chips to keep tabs on
people. To that end, the State of New Hampshire is considering whether to pass legislation to regulate
the use of RFID chips in order to protect an individual's privacy. Efforts in other states, including Massachusetts and
California, have fallen short, so it will be interesting to see if this bellwether state in the presidential primary
process will take this step.

At this point, it doesn't seem likely that this bill will pass, only because legislators certainly aren't educated
enough about RFID to believe that it will be abused by anyone else. If anyone in the general public has any knowledge
about RFID, it's usually in the context of Wal-Mart's use of it to track inventory. Of course, as more details emerge
about the potential abuses, then some serious debate will take place. At the same time, it's up to us to set aside the
paranoic arguements from those who think that the use of RFID will turn our society into a "1984"
scenario and really study what it's pros and cons are.

vspace="4" border="1" />The concept of a 24/7 networked society has come a bit closer to reality with
NEC's announcement of a thin (0.012-inch thick), rechargeable battery that can be
embedded in cards or clothes. For example, this could lead to people walking through ticket booths and having their
tickets scanned without having to take them out of their pockets. (It'll be interesting to see if airlines
and major commuter entities would be in support of this technology due to the likely extra security measures that have
to be taken.)

In addition, NEC foresees the battery, which does not contain any harmful metals such as mercury, lead, or calcium,
being used in applications including electronic paper to tags that trace retail goods in real-time.

Basically, it won't be long before all of us become walking batteries and the phrase "getting my batteries
recharged" takes on a whole other meaning.

price of RFID readers should decrease fairly signficantly, which would in turn result in an increase in production by
chip manufacturers to bring these devices to market. According to the report, a typical RFID reader using the UHF band
costs between $2500 and $3000, making them too expensive for small- and medium-size companies to purchase and use them.
At this point, it's hard to say how far down the price of a reader will go, but as RFID gets used in more manufacturing
environments, the "trust" of the technology will go up, as well as demand, which will turn into more production of
these devices.

vspace="4" border="1" />A new public website designed to be a one-stop shop for network administrators and IT managers
that lists potential threats to wireless networks and lists ways to protect against them has been announced by Network
Chemistry Inc. Wireless Vulnerabilities & Exploits (WVe) features
descriptions of listed threats and, with the input of the site's editorial board, steps on how to keep them away from
networks. According to the site's administrators, anyone can submit a threat listing to the editorial board, who then
review it and post it live to the site if they deem it credible.

The threats are classified in two ways:

Vulnerabilities-defined as a piece of a system or protocol that can be exploited to use the
system in manner other than it was designed for. Examples include an unauthorized entity to pose as an authorized
entity or information from authorized entities to be intercepted by or disclosed to an unauthorized entity

Exploits-a technique, such as a program, piece of code, set of steps, or hardware device, which
takes advantage of one or more vulnerabilities.

recounts a story of how a passenger was caught smoking in the bathroom and was subsequently arrested. There were
notices all over the terminal that smoking was not allowed, but the passenger, who Cochrane describes as a "miscreant
[who] has the complexion, dress and look of a potential bomber." Cochrane, who notes that he flew out of Boston on
September 10, 2001 and passed through all of the bomb sites in London early on July 7 of this year, admits feeling he
may be on a "converging disaster timeline." In other words, he's suffering from a fit of paranoia.

After thinking about what happened with this passenger on this particular flight (he actually advocates that the
"miscreant" be dealt with in a "Biblical style"), Cochrane thinks that RFID would be a useful technology to screen all
bags, clothing, purchases, and belongings besides documents and passports.

It's actually not a bad thought to leverage RFID technology to supplement airport security. Possibly baggage tickets
could have RFID tags implanted in them along with boarding passes. I'm sure there's a myriad of logical ways to use
RFID in this instance. But paranoic overreactions like this will certainly drive privacy advocates and other RFID
opponents to step up their efforts to keep the technology from ever hitting any kind of mainstream usage. Obviously,
the passenger shouldn't have done what he did, but there's no need to go to extremes.

vspace="4" border="1" />It looks like RFID technology may enter your home entertainment realm.
TiVo Inc. has filed a patent application for a personal video recorder (PVR) that
recognizes viewer preferences through an RFID chip embedded in clothing, jewelry or "inserted somewhere [in] the user's
body." (That's an interesting statement!) According to the company, the system would have a remote control
designed to recognize the viewer's RFID tag closest to the PVR. The remote control identifies and notifies the
multimedia device through the RFID chip in the person's clothing or body to tailor the media content to their
preferences.

In other words, what you wear may ultimately decide what you watch. Hmmm...does this mean special outfits for
particular shows? If I wear a replica football jersey, the TV will immediately tune to a football game? Or if I wear
tattered jeans and a t-shirt I'll be switched over to "Lost"?
